The Summer School for Physical Education Teachers 2008, featuring the theme "Nurturing Creativity and Critical Thinking Skills" was initiated by the Education Bureau and organized by the PE Division, Department of Creative Arts and Physical Education, the Hong Kong Institute of Education. It is an annual professional development programme focusing on sharing innovative curricular practices, pedagogy and assessment for promoting creativity and critical thinking through PE.

Theme and Aims

Local PE in schools has gone through a rapid development in the past twenty years. The subject has been included as one of the examination subjects in the HKCE in 1989. In 1990, the government gave a mandate to schools to assign only qualified P.E. teachers to teach the subject. Furthermore, it has been identified as one of the key learning areas in the current education reform (Education Commission, 1999; 2000). Accordingly, schools are recommended to allot at least 5 percent of the curriculum time to the subject. Recently, it has been suggested as other essential learning experience in the forms of general PE in the senior secondary school curriculum. PE becomes one of the electives for public examination in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (CDC, 2007). All these signify considerable professional and academic advancement of the subject in the school curriculum, and require PE teachers to extend and enrich their professional knowledge and capabilities.

The local educational reform addresses the goals of education in terms of ¡§learning to learn¡¨ and ¡§all round development¡¨ and the role of teachers as being facilitators rather than knowledge providers (Education Commission, 1999; 2000). As the key players in the reform movements, teachers have to be reflective and innovative in their teaching. They have to enquire new professional knowledge in order to facilitate their teaching and learning. They have to incorporate new methods of instruction and to introduce new approaches for promoting student-centred learning and providing students with the five essential learning experiences as well as strengthening the cultivation of their positive values and attitudes. Besides, nurturing students¡¦ generic skills, especially creativity, critical thinking and communication, are strongly recommended as important learning-to-learn skills for all key learning areas aiming at promoting their life-long learning capability.

However, how ¡§creativity¡¨ and ¡§critical thinking¡¨ can be implanted in the PE curriculum is still a main concern of most of the PE teachers. Thus, the Summer School for PE Teachers 2008 chose the captioned theme and aimed at nurturing PE teachers with knowledge and skills of cultivating students¡¦ creativity and critical thinking. Each year, the summer school attracts about 500 participants and it surely can provide opportunities and platforms for establishing a learning community and nurturing a knowledge-based sharing culture among Hong Kong PE teachers. The major objectives of the Summer School for PE Teachers 2008 are formulated as follows:

The programmes of professional development include:

1. Conference

2. Experience Sharing Seminars

3. Workshops
