  Library

The Hong Kong Institute of Education Library is composed of the Mong Man Wai Library and the Town Centre Library, offering a full range of resources and services of a modern academic library.

The Mong Man Wai Library located at the centre of the Tai Po Campus, together with the Town Centre Library, provide a total floor area of over 9,200 square meters and seating for 1,500 readers.

The Town Centre Library also provides major library services and resources to students and staff in the Town Centre. Its collection has been carefully chosen to support all courses held there.

The Library houses one of the most comprehensive education collections in the Asia-Pacific Region, including books, printed journals and multimedia materials. The Library also holds a complete set of ERIC full-text documents on microfiche, abstracts of which can be accessed through the Library's on-line catalogue or the Library homepage. In addition to traditional printed materials, electronic resources in all formats, including CD-ROM and WWW-based, have been acquired by the Library.

To further support the research activities of the HKIEd members, the Library also provides inter-library loan and document delivery services to teaching staff as well as final-year BEd students. Books and journal articles not found in the Library could then be requested from local academic libraries or even overseas document delivery services such as Ingenta, the British Library and the National Library of Australia.

  Computing and Multimedia Facilities

We have implemented a fibre-optic Gigabit network which covers the academic and administrative buildings and extends to the staff quarters and student hostels. Wireless network for notebooks is also available in the Library and in some selected areas.

There are a number of computer rooms in the Tai Po Campus and the Town Centre. They are equipped with around 1,000 high-end personal computers for the use of students.

Through the Office of Information Technology and Services, students can access a great variety of multimedia equipment for teaching and learning purposes such as DV camcorders, video-editing systems, VCD/ DVD writers and video tape duplicators.

Centre for Integrating Technology in Education

The Centre for Integrating Technology in Education (CITIE) assists students and academic staff in teacher education to develop requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes for meshing teaching with new technologies, thereby enriching the learning process. It supports students and staff to harvest the benefits from the information and communication technologies, turning them into innovative tools in the repertoire of today's educators.

The Centre designs and delivers training workshops for students to satisfy the needs of the contemporary teaching profession. These workshops assist students to achieve the Government-benchmarked IT Competency in Education. The Centre also manages the TV Studios and Media Production Rooms which are equipped with basic AV systems for students to produce their media assignments. You are welcome to book the Media Production Venues through an on-line booking system (http://uslinux.ied.edu.hk/mrbs_citie). Training is provided to staff and students in their use of the CITIE facilities. The Centre also holds media production workshops regularly to provide necessary know-how for the users to operate the AV equipment inside the Small TV Studios and Media Production Rooms. The Centre also manages the online learning management system Blackboard. You can undertake orientation sessions during the semester.

  Centre for Language in Education

The Centre for Language in Education (CLE) provides comprehensive language enhancement programmes in English and Chinese (including Putonghua). These programmes assist pre-service and in-service student teachers in achieving trilingual competence expected in today's teaching professionals.

CLE also operates two language learning centres, namely the Arthur Samy Chinese Language Learning Centre and the English Learning Centre. These two centres serve a dual function: as language resource centres, and as independent language learning centres. In addition to text-based resources, the Language Learning Centres provide language development opportunities through computer mediated communication and audio-visual and electronic resources such as VCD and DVD, satellite television and interactive multi-media on-line materials. The Centres also provide conversation classes for oral practice. Students with learning problems may also request and receive individual guidance through the Help Desk and the Language Clinics.
