Description:
Massive protests are raging across the globe in the twenty-first century. Political and social turmoil has certainly caused emotional turbulence among the crowd confronted with unprecedented crisis and people are prone to living under the shadow of social trauma. This empirical study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a logotherapeutic approach as a tool to alleviate negative emotions, enhance well-being and cultivate personal growth through the search of meaning in life amid Hong Kong social unrest. Participants (n = 56) took part in a 2-week intervention through a series of logotherapy-oriented exercises which were designed to foster self-reflection and promote optimism in times of adversity. It was hypothesized that a logotherapeutic approach is effective in enhancing well-being and cultivating personal growth while reducing negative emotions through the search of meaning in life under the social unrest in Hong Kong. Results showed that there was no statistically significant effect of logotherapy on reduction in PTSD symptoms and psychological distress as well as enhancement in psychological well-being comparing the experimental group and waitlist control group. However, within-subjects effect on reducing PTSD symptoms and psychological distress was found in both groups. Further research and replication are favourable
