Description:
Objectives: The present study aimed to examine whether conflict resolution proceeds simultaneously or sequentially under the concurrence of multiple conflicts. Methods: Event-related potentials were measured to investigate the neural processes elicited when participants responded to conflicts under a combined conflict paradigm. In this paradigm, participants were asked to indicate the ink color of a Chinese character in the middle of two flanking symbols (presented to either the left or right of fixation). The trials were either congruent or incongruent for any of the flanker, Stroop, and Simon effects, resulting in six conditions of potential conflicts. For an analysis of the behavioral and ERP data, a three-way repeated-measures analysis was carried out to test the congruency effects of the three conflicts and their interactions. Results: The behavioral results replicated the flanker, Simon, and Stroop congruency effects. The ERP results showed that both the flanker and Simon conflicts were associated with N2, and the Stroop conflict was associated with N450. Conclusion: Conflict resolution did not operate in a fully sequential order. The resolution of different types of conflict could involve different control processes that run independently in parallel. All rights reserved
