Description:
STEAM education is being promoted in Hong Kong and preschoolers using technology is a trend in the future. As parents are most preschoolers’ main caregivers and attachment figures, their attitude and decisions can determine their children’s use pattern in digital devices, especially technology has become essential in our daily lives and can be found in every family. This study focuses on investigating Hong Kong parents’ perception of the usage, concerns and challenges of children using electronic devices in a home setting and the relationship with parent-child bonding. The findings are based on the responses to the questionnaire (n=80) from Hong Kong parents with children aged from 3 to 6 and the sharing during the interview (n=5). The findings show that 57.7% of preschoolers spent over 2 hours per weekend watching television and 47.7% of them spent over 2 hours per weekend using other digital devices, revealing the parents’ ideal screen time would not affect their actual screen time. However, only half of the parents would accompany their children when they use them, which is also significantly related to their difficulties in managing their children’s usage and the quality of the parent-child relationship
