Description:
This research aimed at examining whether egocentric bias and social responsibility moderating mindfulness and prosocial behavior. Two studies were included in this research. In the first study, 105 participants were asked to finish a survey examining their trait mindfulness, prosociality, egocentric bias, and social responsibility. The second study used the randomized-control trial method to further examine finding in study 1. In study 2, 216 participants were randomized to either receiving a brief mindfulness intervention or listening to muscles relaxation audio. Then, they were asked to finish a survey testing their state mindfulness, egocentric bias, social responsibility and actual prosocial behavior tendency. In line with the hypotheses, egocentric bias and social responsibility are significant moderators. Egocentric bias weaken, while social responsibility strengthen the effect of mindfulness towards prosocial behavior. The effect of mindfulness on prosocial behavior was stronger among participants with high social responsibility and low egocentric bias. Also, the research experimentally suggests that mindfulness can promote prosocial behavior. However, the significant moderation effect was only found in study 1.There was no significant moderation effect in study 2. This research may help therapists or educators to predict the mindfulness treatment effectiveness based on one's egocentric level and social responsibility level. Some additional aid can be added according to their egocentric bias and social responsibility level to assist patients or students breeding prosociality
