Description:
There are some alarming findings by the Narcotics Division, which presented a high incidence of drug abuse among upper primary students. In response, strengthening the learning elements of anti-drug education is listed as one of the emphases in the newly issued Value Education Curriculum Framework of Hong Kong. General Studies (GS) is the only subject required to know the existence and requirements of harmful substances. However, the usual practice of primary teachers is to follow the current teaching resources, such as the General Studies textbook, which mainly uses pictures and words to teach anti-drug knowledge. The research found that most students feel disengaged in their school learning, which illustrated that the current teaching method might differ from what students favor and that it is essential to change pedagogy. Therefore, this project uses the popular board game UNO card mechanics to design a new game for learning anti-drug knowledge from the GS textbook and other relevant content and having a debriefing session. The newly designed UNO has replaced some UNO card content with different scenarios in which students may encounter drugs and need to use some cards to reject the attempts. It aims to use game-based learning pedagogy (GBL) to enhance students' understanding and motivation about the anti-drug content in GS and to promote the use of this pedagogy in GS. The target group is primary 4 to 6 students. After some interventions, it was found that students gained a higher score and better performance in the post-test when compared with the pre-test result. Also, students are interested in using this pedagogy to learn, as reflected in the questionnaire and interview results. These revealed that the newly designed UNO, a game-based learning pedagogy, can effectively enhance students’ understanding and motivation about antidrug content. This project depicted that spending some effort on other pedagogies is worthwhile to maintain students’ motivation. GS teachers are advised to use it in class to make it more interesting
