Description:
In Hong Kong, a university student must experience a significant change in financial issues such as taking up a part-time job or affording tuition fees by themselves. The financial stress of university students is serious and has negative influences on undergraduates, so it is important to explore financial stress among university students. The objectives of this study are to explore how demographic characteristics affect the financial stress, the stressors, academic and health influences of university students in Hong Kong.Online questionnaire was carried out among 200 undergraduate students from universities in Hong Kong. Quota sampling was used in this study, participants have been selected based on a pre-set quota which is 50% junior students (year land year 2) and 50% senior year students (year 3 or above). There were 5 sections in the questionnaire including demographic characteristics, frequency of financial stress, stressors, academic influences and health influences. The second section was asking whether the respondent is financially stressed in which respondent who chose the option of "no financially stressed" did not need to answer the third to the fifth section. Frequency distribution and cross-tabulation have been used for data analysis. It is found that financial stress is quite common among university students in Hong Kong. Basic personal, personal and family financial characteristics affect the financial stress of students because some of them are the stressors of financial stress. Having enough money to participate in the same activities as peers and insufficient income are the two major stressors as income is closely related to financial stress as mentioned and peer influence is relatively significant in university life. Financial stress brings about different influences on academic study and health; negative impact on GPA and spending less time studying are the majors two influences because financial stress drives them to work a longer hour; for health influences, muscle tension and difficulty sleeping are the common influences
