Description:
Coffee shops are considered essential meeting places for communities in Hong Kong. However, they were adversely affected by the restrictive measures enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic to a proportionally greater degree than other types of businesses, particularly local independent shops. This paper aims to pinpoint how these coffee shops survive amidst COVID-19 with the concept of third place through a case study. This case study will focus on a Hong Kong coffee shop named W Coffee Shop, located in an industrial building in Kwun Tong since 2015. Field observation in the coffee shop and individual in-depth interviews with the shop owner and customers will be conducted in this research. The case study highlights how W Coffee and the owner created its community and connection with customers, turning random customers into regular customers and showing resilience during the hardship of the shop. It also illustrates the potential role that coffee shops can play in the community. This study also discusses how coffee shops are seen as co-working places in urban society. So, small independent coffee shops have great potential to contribute to their community
