Description:
Objectives: To examine whether the eating disorders mediates the link between overprotective parenting style and well-being. And whether self-objectification moderates the mediation between overprotective parenting style and well-being, such that the relationship was stronger among participants with higher levels of self-objectification. Methods: A total of 556 participants (74.6% aged 18-25, 76.6% female) were recruited through the Chinese online platform and completed the study. Results: Results showed that 1) self-objectification was positively correlated with eating disorders; 2) the overprotective parenting style positively influenced self-objectification and eating disorders; 3) self-objectification significantly moderated the positive relationship between overprotective parenting style and eating disorders, subsequently reducing subjective well-being. Conclusion: This study advanced and expanded theoretical understanding of parenting styles, self-objectification, eating disorders, and well-being.
