Description:
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the potential moderating effect of music listening on the relationship between academic stress and well-being. Methods: Participants were 181 students from Hong Kong universities. The complete survey included questions from Perceived Academic Stress Scale, Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, and adapted questions from The Music Use, and Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire. The moderation analyses were conducted by using the PROCESS Model 1. Results: Findings revealed that music listening was negatively correlated with workload and examination stress and the stress related to students’ academic self-perceptions, but it was not significantly correlated with stress associated with academic expectations. In addition, music listening was positively associated with the well-being of university students. However, the habits of listening to music could not moderate the relationship between academic stress and well-being among university students. Conclusion: These findings suggest that, although habitually listening to music may not be an effective stress reliever for students to reduce the negative impact of academic stress on well-being, the use of music can promote emotional resilience and improve their well-being
